New Year resolutions for your home

3 MIN READ January 13, 2019
So you’ve made some New Year resolutions for yourself and for your finances, and now it’s time to make some for your home. Even one or two goals you’d like to achieve around the house by the end of the year should help you on…

Cut down on your energy use

As well as saving you money and helping your home, this great resolution is also good for the planet. If you don’t already, make sure you’ve got a recycling plan in place, turn off lights when you’re not using them, and turn off the tap when you’re brushing your teeth. Also make sure that your home is well-insulated so that you’re not wasting energy heating or cooling your home.

Put your safety first

You should be checking these things throughout the year but if you haven’t done so in a while, now’s a good time to sort out your smoke alarms and check for hazards around your home. Noticed mould growing? Arrange to get it sorted before it gets worse. It’s also a good idea to put an emergency kit together for you and your family or check the contents of the one you currently have.

Declutter and donate

You’ve probably been meaning to declutter certain spaces in your home like cupboards and drawers, and what better way to start off the year than with a clean and tidy home? Set aside a bit of time to clear out messy spaces and get rid of anything you don’t need. Put anything you don’t use anymore into a pile and donate it at your nearest charity store.

Spruce up your garden

If you’ve been thinking about putting in a new deck or fixing up that broken gate, make a resolution to get these things sorted by the end of the year. Put a budget in place and start saving for repairs or landscaping if you haven’t already. While it’s warmer, you and your garden will appreciate a little bit of sun and TLC.

Do your paperwork

Unless you’re super organised and have arranged for all of your letters and bills to arrive electronically, you’ve probably got quite a bit of paperwork lying around your home or stuffed into what is now known as the ‘mail drawer.’ Make a resolution to file everything accordingly so you know where all of your important documents are at any time. Investing in a concertina file or even a filing cabinet is a good idea to store everything neatly and safely.

Once you’ve set up your goals, the key is to stick to them! Make an appointment with yourself to check in halfway through the year and see how you’re going. Good luck!
