Wash your hands

This one might seem obvious, but it’s important to keep up the good old hygiene practices during cold and flu season. Although you wash your hands after using the bathroom, it’s also a good idea to wash your hands throughout the day after touching your workmates’ pens or computer equipment, especially if they’re showing signs of sickness. If you don’t want to be heading to the sink every so often, keep a bottle of hand sanitiser on your desk and use it after any contact with others.

If you’re sick, stay home

And encourage others to, too. If you’re feeling under the weather, the best place for you to be is at home resting and keeping warm. Although you might feel as though you’re letting the team or your boss down, it’s better to keep your germs to yourself rather than spread them to everyone else in the office. If you’re worried about workload, you might be able to work from home instead, just make sure you get a good balance of work and rest in too.

Wrap up warm

You might be lucky and have a warm cosy office, but often with that many people working inside, the air conditioning is likely to still be operating. Make sure you keep yourself warm and wrap up with a scarf or coat if you need to. This is particularly important when leaving the office to head home – you want to avoid huge changes in your body temperature if you can, and going straight from a warm office to a freezing car park without wrapping up is not going to be the best idea.

Get enough sleep

Winter is the best time to get more sleep than usual – and not just because it’s cold. The more sleep your body has, the stronger it will be when it needs to fight off an illness. Try going to bed even just an hour earlier during this season and it will make all the difference to how well your body handles any germs that might be out and about. 

Have some vitamins handy

It could be a good idea to have a few jars of vitamin C around the office – one a day is usually enough to keep your immunity up, but you can take a few more when people start sniffling and spluttering. Zinc tablets are also fantastic for your immunity and have been proven to reduce the severity and longevity of a cold, so maybe keep a few of these in your desk drawer too!
