How to thrive in the first week back

 

It can be hard to get back into the swing of things after a holiday break filled with festivities and copious amounts of food. There are a few things you can do to kick yourself into gear and thrive in the first week back.

Get organised

It can be overwhelming thinking about what’s waiting in your inbox, when your meetings begin, and which deadlines are coming up. Make sure you don’t schedule in too much for the first day back so you can allocate time to organise your emails and get your head around things.

Make a list and set goals

Plan out your week with a to-do list and priorities for the upcoming days. Make some goals for what you want to achieve in your first week back, but don’t overcommit yourself so you’re not working late every night.

Declutter

Remember, a clean desk = a clean mind. Studies show that having a tidy and personal workspace can improve your mood. Take some time to get rid of old notes and unnecessary clutter. Get yourself a new notepad to start the year fresh, and add some personal touches like a plant or a photo to lift your mood.

Readjust your body clock

The holidays may have changed your sleeping habits and you might have been enjoying some late nights and sleep-ins. Getting back into a bedtime routine a few days before you head to work will make sure your body isn’t too shocked with the early start. This will make you feel more awake and put together the first day back.

Plan a nice weekend

Make sure you plan something nice for the upcoming weekend so you have something to look forward to. You could even do a weekend away as one more dose of holiday cheer. If this isn’t an option, you don’t need to do anything grand, just the activities that always make you happy.
