Stay Sun Smart this Summer

There’s nothing worse than being sunburnt in the height of summer. The combination of the heat radiating from the sun and the heat radiating from your sunburn is definitely not ideal. We’ve put together some great tips to stay sun smart this summer.

SPF is your BFF

The sun here in New Zealand can do a lot of damage in a short amount of time. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen as this blocks from both UVA and UVB radiation. Choose one that is SPF30 and above, SPF50 is ideal. Apply your sunscreen 20 minutes before you leave the house to ensure you’re fully protected. Use about one teaspoon per body part and continue to apply this every 2 hours (or after swimming).

Protect your eyes

Sunglasses are a great way to protect your eyes from UVB/UVA rays. Not all sunglasses protect against radiation though so make sure you check the label. It’s a great idea to get the kids wearing them too, especially at the beach where the sun reflects off the water and sand.

Keep covered

Put on a hat to protect the top of your head, neck and ears from the sun – the wider the hat the more coverage you’ll have. Wear light clothing that covers your body so you have less exposure to the direct sun. Get the kids some rash shirts and a swimming hat to keep them protected in the water.

Find the shade

If you’re planning on spending time outdoors, try to organise it early or later in the day when the UV levels are lower. If this isn’t possible, try to find some shade under a tree or bring along an umbrella or a pop-up tent.

Stock up on Aloe Vera

If you do get sunburnt, make sure you have some Aloe Vera in the fridge ready to go. Aloe Vera contains antioxidants to keep your skin hydrated. Not only does it soothe your sore skin, but it also helps prevent your skin from peeling.
